1973-1975: Ethernet Developed
Ethernet was developed at Xerox PARC in Palo Alto, California by Robert Metcalfe, David Boggs, Chuck Thacker, and Butler Lampson.- 1980: Ethernet Standardized
An alliance including DEC, Intel, and Xerox joined together to modify Ethernet’s local addresses to global addresses and standardize the protocol. - 1990s: Rockwell Automation develops EtherNet/IP
Rockwell Automation developed EtherNet/IP from Ethernet. They intended for EtherNet/IP to become an open source protocol. - 2000: ODVA introduces EtherNet/IP
The Open DeviceNet Vendors Association, or ODVA, began regulating EtherNet/IP in 2000. - Today: EtherNet/IP most widely used Ethernet protocol
