What Is Modbus TCP?
Modbus TCP, an Ethernet version of Modbus RTU developed by Modicon in the late 1970s, gained widespread adoption due to its simplicity, featuring a small command set and clear message structure, making it a top choice for industrial device communication.
Modbus RTU was favored by vendors for its minimal hardware requirements, needing only a serial channel and RS-485 driver chip. However, end-users encountered challenges like low throughput and troubleshooting complexities. Modbus TCP resolves these issues.
Modbus TCP retains the command set, addressing modes, and network representation of Modbus RTU, enabling seamless migration of RTU applications to Ethernet by transmitting messages over TCP/IP connections.
Real Time Automation, Inc. offers Modbus TCP Client/Server Source Code Stack Bundle development kits, designed for industrial platforms and compatible with various RTOS systems and TCP/IP stacks. This kit facilitates rapid deployment of Modbus TCP client and server communications, supported by royalty-free source code, sample objects, PC tools, and comprehensive documentation.
